Moroccan Medina

Moroccan Medina

Moroccan Medina. Original: Graphite on paper, 2018.

I captured this beautiful gate that leads into the old part of Fez Morocco using graphite on paper. The traditional gate, called Bab el Mahrouk, demonstrates 13th-century Almohad architecture and stands as a testament to Fez’s rich history. The intricate stonework and strategic significance are reflected in the artwork, with each line celebrating the gate’s enduring beauty and historical importance.
This style of door is very common throughout Morocco, even in some contemporary buildings. It made me wonder if we in the west might be a little stifled with our insistence on straight lines and right angles in so much of our architecture
