This oil painting was a pro bono commission a church in Tacoma, Washington, USA. The ancient tradition of the seven weeks before Easter is marked by a sense of denial, aridity, and simplicity. The hope is that it gives the practitioner the opportunity to examine the everyday world, and that includes one’s own life and life choices. It’s also a time that metaphorically makes room for new growth. No surprise it always takes place in the spring of the northern hemisphere.
